Somewhere between What we left behind And the spark that burned You into mine There was a joint Rolled tight, rolled slow Like heaven leaned in Just to let us know Held it in Too long to breathe Knew damn well It wouldn’t keep Edges glowing Burning fast We were counting down What wouldn’t last We held it in We let it choke Love went up In white smoke Held it in Till we broke Now everything’s A fucking joke Lips still wet With resin lies Funny feelings Dead behind our eyes Laughing like We don’t feel pain Same old rush Same old stain Clouds are gone The room feels bare Too much truth In the air We held it in We let it choke Love went up In white smoke Held it in Till we broke Now everything’s A fucking joke Messed with our heads Yeah, no doubt Didn’t stop Till we passed out Held it in We let it choke Love went up In white smoke Held it in Till we broke Now everything’s A joke

[Original version available here] The Joint (Erin Michelle Smith 5/13/1998) Somewhere in-between the residue of us and the hot flame that ignited our love Once laid a fat, tightly rolled joint - as though we were both blessed from above We held it in as long as we could, longer than one should For we both knew it wouldn't last, the edges were burning fast And even though our lips are still moist from resin kisses And still get though funny feelings that everyone misses We've long exhaled our clouds of white smoke Now, everything seems like a big joke It messed with our minds without a doubt At least until we both passed out
